Looking for any recommendations on guides for this area of MN. My son (14) and I are looking to catch fish, but also to learn from someone who is willing to spend time discussing the hows, whys, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Scott, there are a number of great guides for the lakes you mentioned. For Leech, check with Chip Leer with the Leech Lake Guide Coliation and for Winnie Jeff Sundin is one guide that comes to mind, his email address is jsundin@paulbuyan.net plus contact Ben's Bait shop in Grand Rapids. A lot of the local guides are known here. Also if you are planning to stay at a resort, most have guides that work with them.
Leech and Winnie are great places to bring kids as they have a great chance to catch something and get hooked on fishing.
