How do the gander mountain guide series rods stack up? Decent, above average, or awful.

Lee, I have several of them, lots of bang for the buck and when I need new rods, I'll be buying more. Sure you can spend more $$ on those "G" & "St." rods, but those companies have a lot of $$$ invested in making the angling public believe that if you use our high $$$ rod, you'll catch more fish, I'm not convinced.

I'll second that - the warranty is great also - took 2 back last year. Sure would hate to see one of the kids step on a G. Loomis or St. Croix (those are for Daddy's days out by himself)

Last year, I bought two of the rods and I feel they are a really good value. ( Good rod at a reasonable price) I'll buy another guide series when I need one again.

I heard that the Gander Mountain rods are private labeled St. Croix rods (from the salesman at Gander Mountain). In any case - it's been a great rod for me.

Thanks alot for the info. They have them on sale for $19.99 right now, so I figured I pick up a new ultra light for crappies and a new medium action for jigging.

They used to be St Croix blanks. I don't think that they are any more.

Gander carries at least three different lines of Guide Series rods. My point is, if you buy a Chevy based on what ten people are saying about their Lumina's, and you go out and buy a Chevette, you may not be too impressed.

Good point - the GS rods I was talking about are in the 40.00 to 50.00 range.

I work at G.Mtn part-tiime and can verify that they are not St.Croix blanks. I was told that the first year they came out, they were, but are not now. They are made by a company that makes rods for many of the big stores/catalogs, to whatever specification the store wants.

For the money, I like the Guide series IM-7 and the Pro Select series IM-8, especially when they are on sale at $10 off. They are not as good as a St. Croix or Loomis, but they are not that far behind either for a lot less. I own a 7' Pro select and it is not nearly as fast action as my 7' St. Croix, but it is close to the same sensitivity.

Other rods in that same price range that would work well are the $50 Berkley Lightning rod classic and the Fenwick for $65. Either way test out a few, flex them on the floor, hang a reel on them to see how they balance, and drag the tip across some textured surface to see how sensitive they are. It will be spring soon enough. Hope this helps. Bret
