Lake fishing situation.

Prior to the spawning at 42-45 deg. F, where do the fish stage in relation to the spawning beds?

I have read that the best prespawn bite is 40 deg. F and the fish stage in the nearest 30 ft. water depth. Any of this correct.

You're absolutely correct and we proved it out on Boysen last year.

I like to find the nearest rock ledge, rock hump or pile in the prespawn area that is surrounded by significantly deeper water. The deeper water may be 15 feet - 30 feet. Fish the edges by jigging from shallow to deeper. If one spot is not productive, find another and keep trying - the fish are in the area. This approach works almost anywhere there are walleyes
Good luck - Woody
