I want th target smallies (instead of geting them as a bonus fish) this year. I know tubes, shiners, and crayfish are often used, and that finding structure is key, But could you fill me in on some of the finer details that can help me consistantly catch fish. I am looking for another alternative when the EYE bite is not so great in ERIE. I usualy do lorain and the cleveland areas.

I,ve watched some of the TV pros use spinner baits in Erie. They rip them pretty fast. Also twister tails work and years ago I used inline spinners. I hear they get a lot of bass off the artificial reef out of Lorain.

On three different occasions (all in the month of Sept) we fished the water around Pelee Island (Ontario waters). We used simple rigs -- single hook, a couple split shot, and spinning rigs. We looked for little humps of rubble off the island in 20 to 25 feet. All three times we caught and released a ton of smallmouth - with 4 to 5 pounders not uncommon. It's been 3 yrs since my last trip, so I don't know how it is going now. Our bait was crawfish.

One other outing was mixed bag -- perch, walleye, and smallies, off the artificial reef outside Lorain. On this one we used 1/8 oz jigs tipped with half crawlers. Some walleyes were good, but the bass were nothing like those around Pelee.
