Looking at this seat suspension for my wife, who just had back surgery (seems like a common problem). Is anyone using this seat suspension and does it do a good job of taking the jarring out of a long ride?

Yes they are very effective. I doubt seriously that you'll be disappointed

Yes and Yes.

Glyde ride is great as are any of the other seat designs that use a system that allows you to have about 4 inches of controlled travel.

When you come off the top of a wave - having some "give" in the seat - is the difference between back pain and no back pain.

The glyde ride system is an adaption of the hydralic / spring that have been used on farming tractors and semi trailer tractors for many years. In the same vein as boats - neither of those vehicles have any suspension to cushion the back and kidneys of the drivers. These spring loaded - hydralic dampened seating systems have saved many many backs from injury.

Go for such a system - whether it is glyder ride (excellent choice) or some other system that uses the same principle.

Basically - get a seating system that allows a significant amount of travel - when coming off a big wave or equivalent - and also insure that you have a shock absorber or equivalent - to dampen the rebound of the spring.

Take care

I second what ETT says. I run two in my boat and they are worth a ton. My fishing partner has a bad back and swears by the seats. After a long day on the water, your back will thank you!

You might want to search the archives as there are a number of good threads on the Glyde-Rydes.

I know any boat I run in the future will have the Glyde-Ryde suspensions in it - I am definitely convinced they are a quality product backed by quality people.

They are real nice but pricey. Check your local tractor dealer(John Deere, new Holland. I bought two there for less than I could buy 1 Glyde Ride. Same thing, adjustable spring tension to weight. Comes with seat too. I bought mine at the New Holland implement dealer. Found them while looking for batteries.

I have had Ultra-Ride seats for the last couple of years. It has saved my back and the backs of my passengers.

REW, can this seat be adapted to fit a 219 Stratos where the driver's seat is hinged on a compartment? Thanks, tr

I've heard that they are really great. Their web site may answer some of your questions - http://www.glyde-ryde.com/

Not to be real critical; however, just to clear up a couple of points that have been made in a few other posts.

The Glyde-Ryde seat suspension is NOT the same as a tractor seat that you can buy through the local implement dealer or through Northern, etc. The concept of a spring/hydraulic dampening system is similar, but there are many differences in the actual product. For one thing the springs on the Glyde Ryde units are much stronger and have been made for that application (treated, counterwound, etc.). Also, the Glyde Rydes have a stainless coating that will prevent rust in a marine environment.

Will the other, less expensive suspensions work? Sure - as long as you match the seat to the application. If you fish infrequently or on waters where you don't continuously take a pounding, you can get by with almost anything. I personally know of 4 tournament anglers who are not running the suspensions they started out with - they just didn't hold up on the water they fished over time.

As far as being expensive; well, so is a quality sonar and trolling motor. Many sonar units and trolling motors are more expensive than the Glyde Ryde. I look at it as another tool that helps me enjoy my time on the water and lets me be more productive while I'm there.

I fish mainly in Lake Huron and Lake Erie and appreciate the qualities of the Gyde Rydes when running long distances over sometimes very ugly water. Please check out their website or give them a call with any questions - use, mounting, etc. They have quite a bit of info for most applications. If you made the Glyde Rydes, wouldn't you rather justify a fair price for a quality product than apologize for an inferior one that failed at a cheaper price? That statement can be made for just about any high-quality product on the market.

Sorry for the long post, but just wanted to comment on a few things.

I have had back surgery as well. I have a 12" steel rod and 14 fused vertebre, needless to say these seats have extended my tournament fishing years greatly. Impact is worst, kind of like jumping off a tall building... it's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the end!
