Rainy Lake Smallies

Its funny, I've been going to Rainy Lake for the last 5 years which is supposed to be one of the bes Smally lake in the country. All I've ever caught is walleyes and northerns. I can remember one smally and he was little. So what's the trick?? I'm heading back up this August and I'm gonna make more of an effort to catch some of those guys. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
