Does a high quality spin jigging rod like a Gloomis or St.Croix make for a lousy casting rod for casting cranks and jigs? Or do you just want a slightly longer one like 6 1/2' or longer? Thanks

Your intimation is correct. For casting cranks with spinning gear, I do prefer 6 1/2" or over. A little softer tip is nice, but not too whippy. Longer lengths are nice for casting distance and the soft tip provides cushioning when playing fish. I use a 7' for casting cranks, some guys go longer than that (see REW's post on steelhead rods for walleye fishing).

Having said that, when I need to, I have used my jigging rods for casting and casting rods for jigging, when I was in a pinch. I guess that makes most of my rods multipurpose rods.
