I've got a chance to purchase a Lowrance 1600 for $499, and I've got a line on a guy who will give me a steal on Global Map 2000 as he has 8 of them. He has not come back with a price yet though. What are anyones thoughts on these two units. I like the size of the screen on the 2000. Aybody else have pros or cons to either unit?

I personally use the LMS160 which is the same as the 1600 with sonar added. I would highly recommend the 1600 over the 2000.It's much more compact and easier to mount. It's also easier to use and can be linked to your PC.You can store and transfer data and can customize maps. It's also a current unit where as I don't believe the 2000 is made anymore or at least not advertised. You did'nt mention if these GPS's where new or used? If its used I think he's asking to much.I bought my LMS 160 on clearance last year for $499 new(normally this sells for about $100 more than the 1600).The CD-ROM and compact size make the 1600 a nicer unit.

Both units are new. They don't make the 2000 anymore. What appeals to me abotu the 2000 is the size of the screen. Are you happy with your 160? THe screen is 160 x 160, is that enough pixels so that you icon don't take up 1/2 the screen when you are zoomed in to 1/10 of a mile. I currently have a Lowrance 310, it has very few pixels, I don't even know how many, but when you place icons, they take up a huge amount of screen.

I have owned both units. The GM1600 is great for the interface to the PC but after that it is all downhill compared to the GM2000. I totally regret selling the 2000 and buying the 1600. If I had to do it all over I would keep the 2000.

The screen size of the 1600 is no handicap at all.I used to own a LMS350 and much prefer the LMS160.With the 350 I always had the screen split anyway 1/2gps 1/2sonar.Now I use my 160 primarily as a gps(I have a transducer hooked up as a back up)and use an X85 as my primary sonar.I like the size and wieght of the 1600. I had trouble snaping off mounting brackets on the 350 in rough water(same size as 2000)at higher speeds. My new boat has limited mounting space and the 160 fits like a glove.I very much prefer the operation of the 1600 vs 350(2000)and would not go back. The zoom is great, you also get more icons to work with and can store them and your waypoints safely at home on your PC. Tough choice Lowrance makes good stuff,Both are nice.Do you have space to mount the 2000 and your other electronics(graph, vhf radio, compass, etc.Hope this helps.
