We are heading to Baudette April 11th. We went last year, but first headed to a cabin in Canada on the way up. On the way home, I don't know how we did it, but we ended up on gravel roads for longer than I would like to admit to. So this year I'd like to make sure I know the best way to take. We are starting in Chippewa Falls, WI. We can end up in Duluth pretty easy. Here's what I was thinking:

Taking 2/46 out of Duluth to 72 north. 72 will take us directly into Baudette from the looks of it.

Does anyone know if this is the best way? Hopefully 2/46 (sorry, I can't tell which it is, they look like they run on top of each other) are not cattle paths.

Thanks in advance,

John

I go to Baudette quite often as I have a place up there. I start from Mpls but end up on Hwy 2 at Deer River, as you would from Duluth. 46 north at Deer River to Northome, left to Shooks on 71 for a short and then Hwy 1 (watch the signs to Baudette), right to Kelliher, which is 72, to Baudette. You may want to stop at Upper Red for Crappies, Huddecks just north of town. If you don't have a place to stay, look up the resorts on the web. Lots of them, all are good. Good luck.....Kaz

Yep. Fastest way is to get on Hwy 2 in Cloquet. (I take 35 to Moose Lake to Floodwood) Take that to Deer River about 20 miles from Grand Rapids (New Casino on the corner) and take 46 to Northhome and turn left on 71. Take your next right(about 1 mile down the road) on 1 and follow that to Shooks and turn right. From there 72 is a straight, only 2 dog legs, shot to Baudette. You will only go through one town, Kellier, with gas on 72 so be sure you are fueld up in BEFORE you get on that road if you hit it after hours. I usually top my tank off in Grand Rapids as a precaution and then again in Baudette.

When you see the blinking red lights on the US Coast Guard Loran-C Tower, you are 40 minutes from downtown Baudette.

I have been making this trip from the Twin Cities 3-4 times a year for 12 years and it is the fastest. Watch for the air patrol in the summer...$$$$

And when you arrive, you'll be happy to know you're in the only Minnesota County without traffic signal lights -- not one in the whole county.

Cisco: Intrusting fact!! I pay taxes up there and did't know that trivia...Aquaman..You gave a good bit of advise on the gas and the "Eye in the Sky". Mostly during the opennings of fishing and hunting thou, for the traffic traps!!! NOTE crappies are on at Red Lake. Several good reports from whose's who have been there this week!! Good luck fishing....Kaz
