I have used Trilene XL for the last 7 years and I never had a problem with it, I swore I 'd never use another line .
Until last year all of a sudden I'm losin fish, the line was breaking relly easy, it was gettin all kinked up, It just plain sucked I couldn't believe my friend and I thought maybe we just got a couple a bad spools and we bought more twice in a row after that and bam same thing.
This all happend around the time the box had been changed I noticed right off the bat the line itself didn't feel the same.

I know they changed more than just the box, they must've changed their whole formula.
I always say if it works why fix it?????
Has anyone else had problems with XL 6 lb. - 10 lb. ?????

I've noticed the same thing, Deadeye

I respooled (on a machine) a couple spools of 8# the tail end of last week for a trip to Red Wing Saturday. I couldn't believe my eyes! Twisted, kinky garbage. If you grasp it in your fingers and run the line through them, you can feel that it is twisted right off the spool.

Time to find a new line, I guess. Fortunately, I wasn't able to find the bulk spools I usually get, so I don't have a bunch of useless line sitting around!

I found a line that is 100% better than Trilene .RAPALA FINESSE
If you liked XL this stuff is it. You can buy it at Dicks.
They just came out with it . I absolutley love it is abrasion resistant excellant knot strength, low memory, extra limp, no tangles, very castable, thin diameter and best of all it held up to the muskie test we nailed 2 of em on it. And got them in!!
Try it.
You have to let some line off your spool and let it memorize
When you first get out there , but that,s true of any line.

I buy alot of Trilene in the small spools for leaders and miscelaneous uses. From what I have gathered 1 in about 16 spools of Trilene seems to be miss spooled and has problems out of the box. Normally you can tell if its a bad box from just looking at the line on the spool. Trilene is still great stuff but I guess with profit margins getting more and more important us consumers have to be more and more vigillant in our purchases.

Wouldnt be cause of them pesty zebra mussels would it? We've been having a real time down here in the Ohio River with these things. I was using 10lb test and had to go to 14-17lb to compensate in bass tourneys. Them #### zebras are like buzzsaws. I've been a Trilene XL and Clear Blue Stren fan forever. But these little pests make me start spooling barb-wire! Hope them things dont get into your water. :-) ;-) Russell

We souldn't be having those pesky muscles here for a long time coming. No the biggest problems with trilene is just the way it is put on the spools.

I agree the new Berkly line leaves alot to be desired so I tried the Rapala finesse line in 4lb clear for crappies with light jigs the stuff is great in open water in Kansas two weeks ago,I got it at Cabelas in Owatonna ,they had rebates slips for $2.00 good until July 31, 2001 .

Concur with all the negative comments on Trilene XL. That's all I used to use up to about three years ago. It seems at about the time they came out with their Fireline, their mono products went down the tube. The line deteriorates and breaks very easily in a very short period of time, in fact I've bought new(?) line out of the box that was unuseable because of the lack of its strength.

Needless to say, Trilene no longer has my business. I have found a new, more dependable line to use.

Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.

Same Story here. What was once good line. Only lasts about two trips then turns to junk. Just like that stren sensor. I went to xt on my spinning reels. If they decide to make that line junk also. I'm quitting.!. Give me quality or I'm moving on.!!! "COMA"

I also had problems with a spool of 10lb test xl. I was using it for leader material and had several fish break off. I normally never buy XL but it was the only low vis. green they had. I have had fantastic luck with XT, XT seems to have great strength and is very durable. I used it alot for salmonand haven't had any problems.

I had a discussion with Dean Capra about this at the Minn Sports Show. He stated that he has had no problems with the Trilene XL and has always gone back to it after trying other products (e.g. Stren). He has yet to try the Rapala line but plans to. I, too, am going spool some up for a try. As per Dean's comments, Rapala would not put their name on a product that was not high quality. I usually use Fireline for most applications (both rigging and jigging) and Seguar floro for snells/leaders.

For what its worth, my 12-year-old son conducted a science project this winter to test relative strength of mono lines (4lb) across a number of brands. The test was done with 24" sections of line, 6 trials on each line type, recording the breaking point measured on a digital scale. He also observed the stretch each line had. Each trial was recorded and the average was used for comparison. The line types include Trilene XL, Trilene Trounament, Stren, and others. Stren ended up being the clear winner on breaking strength, but was also the one that had the most stretch prior to breaking.

XL is all I've ever used and I haven't noticed a change. However, I did recently read that they changed the formula for XL. I don't know if the change was made last year or is new for this year. I'll keep using it until it fails me..
