I no the 25 watt radios with 8 foot antenna are the best BUT, I would like to no who is useing the hand held models and what are your thoughts about there performance, Are they a waste of money.

Usually YES.(end of quote)
Why are you asking though? Do you have a marine radio on board now or you thinking of getting one?
Go with the "regular" marine radio if ya can.

To answer your Question. The hand helds work good but they do not have the range. Most of us that have them use them for back-up or for close quarters situations. in the marinas or nearby..At a weigh-in to keep in contact with boats coming in things like that.

Thinking of buying a radio but didn't really want to mount one in the boat because I wouldn't need it very often.
I have friends that have them and they want to talk when we take trips like lake erie.
I fish the Mississippi River System most of the time, So didn't feel I needed one.
Thanks for your post and good fishing. Sam

I agree with most of the posts here. I have a handheld and, except for backup, it's pretty useless, especially in the big ditches like Erie.
I really don't think you will be happy. Find as inconspicous place as you can and put in a fixed mount and an 8' antenna. You can disconnect and remove when not in use and it should be an advantage on resale.

If you ever have an emergency you will won't have to think twice about the cost. The water is not to be taken lightly.

I have a handheld for back up in the summer in the boat. I am glad I have it, because in the winter time on the snowmobile when ice fishing it works great to keep in touch with my fishing partner. I fish the LOTW a lot and I can keep in touch with the track-vans as well, in the winter. Great to have for winter.

There are some pretty small units out there for about $150. Standard Eclipse, ICOM, etc.
