I just purchased a 90 hp Mercury and wondered if it is to big a motor to troll with. Anyone have any experience with a 90 mercury for trolling? Will it hurt the engine to idle it for long periods? Thanks for any info. bigo

I have a '98 Merc 90 horse and know now that I should have gotten a 115. The 90 is a 3 cylinder, and a dependable motor, but the Mercs over 100 are 4s and designed to cut-out the top two cylinders when running at low and closed throttle.

I ended up putting a 9.9 hp Merc on my boat as a kicker. It is a four cycle and great trolling motor, but for the same money I could have gone with a 115 instead of the 90.

excellent choice of motor. are you running that on a tiller style or a wheel boat?

I run the a 2000 Merc 90hp. It will troll all day no problem. The secret is that I put out a drift sock the slow down the boat, but more importantly it allows me to run the motor at a higher rpm to make for smoother running and less smoke.
