Going on family vacation end of June to Mille Lacs & was wondering what works best at this time and where to fish? (Anyone want to give up a hot spot?)
Hire the "Griz" for a day a Minnesota Walleye fishing Guide. He is one of the best on Millac Lake. He guides out of Terry's Boat Harbor and his web site is www.fishwiththegriz.com. you won't be sorry.

mille lacs in june will be a great trip. the bite is fairly consistent from year to year. there are a few basic techniques that will be working that time of year. Mille Lacs has mud flats, gravel bars, rock structure and sand shore breaks. there is a map that you can pick up called the Mille Lacs Walleye Whiffer that was published by King Tutts bait shop in Garrison, MN. They offer excellent spots and techniques for the specific areas.
as your trip nears, make sure you check back in for an up to date report! you have selected a great Lake. Have fun.

Hey Ranger,
Wife and I went there last June for a week and fell in love with that lake..2 things I would recomend as "must haves" is- 1. a marine radio..This will help out to listen to traffic and pick up on some fishing spots..and 2. a good GPS..Don't know if you fish BIG waters much, but the lake is massive..The aforementioned Walleye Wiffer map has all of the GPS coordinates right on it and will be of valuable assistance..
Technique wise, we used slip bobbers and had good success with them..Mostly used leeches and rigged a bottom bouncer with a crawler, but had best results with the leeches..Since we were staying in the southwest corner of the lake, that is where we put in the most time fishing..Did our best in the 17 to 22 foot range off the rock reefs a ways..Try north of Spirit Island and around Sloppy Joes and Rocky Reef and that should give you a good starting point..If you don't do any good there, you might have to travel out to the mud flats on the north end of the lake..
Enjoy the place and watch out for the slot limits..Had to turn a 6.5 lber back last year and it almost broke my heart!!

Lundeen's Tackle Castle (Onamia address) gives thorough updates weekly throughout the year on the Internet. Make a short search for their website and reply that you want to be on their mailing list -- they'll email you every week. Their info is always up to date and complete.
A 6 1/2 pound fish is too big to eat and too small to mount...... Just the right size to reproduce!
Something to keep in mind.
I agree with what has been said in the above posts. This is prime time for the mud flats on the north and center area of the lake and the gravel bars to the south. Don't ignore the shallow rock bite with a slip bobber during the middle of the day when the wind is blowing. I like to run spinner rigs that I make myself for the mud and gravel. Make sure you have a long leader (at least 7-9 ft. or longer if conditions indicate) with a hammered silver blade if sunny or brass if cloudy. A #2 or #3 indiana or colorado blade is a good size. I run a 3-way rig with a 1-3 oz. weight on a dropper of 18 inches. Let the sinker down but don't let it drag on the bottom. I run crawlers, leeches and minnows with this rig. Fish the edge or lip of the structure all the way down to the base. Sometimes the fish will be going right on top of the flat or bar./ This seems to happen more in windy conditions. Use a drift sock for boat control whether drifting or trolling. In a real tough bite I use a bare line of 4# test with a small red hook and an attractor bead and leech and move real slow (long leader). Good luck

You,ve picked a great time of the year visit Minnesota and Lake Mille Lacs.I agree totally with Ski's advice and would also recommend the King Tutts Whiffer Map. It's very accurate and informative. If you could push your vacation up a couple of weeks you could witness one of the biggest and toughest walleye tournaments in America. The Wave wacker Invitational June 7th&8th at Flagship Inn/Fishermans Wharf on the east side.Your family would enjoy the weigh-in and maybe you could pick up a few pointers from the pro's.Have fun and be safe!
