You don't really need a line counter reel for downriggers. You usually let out anywhere from 15-50ft. of line before you clip it to the downrigger, which you can measure by sight. After that you don't even look at your counter. You can get a baitcaster without a line counter for cheaper. Or check out the okuma line counter reels, there cheaper and so far I can't complain, been useing mine for two seasons. Also for your rod, you don't need as heavy duty of a rod as you would for dispey divers or in-boards rods. A ugly stick 7 footer would do.
Good Luck!!

I can get you a decent price on Okuma line counters if that is what you want. I like mine, use them for pulling cranks & boards. E-mail if interested.

I don't run line counter reels on my downriggers. I use them on boards, divers, and long lines. All of my LC reels are Diawas and haven't had any major problems in 9 years of use. They are reliable reels. A couple of times I've caught a real screamer King on a rigger and wished that I had a line counter reel on it though. If you can go for it buy the SG47LC Diawa reels for your riggers. I will eventually replace my standard 47's that I'm currently using for riggers with these my self. These work well for me at least 95% of the time though. Good fishing!

I run all diawa in my spread. 47lc's on Heartland rods.Bass pro shop has these reels on sale for 59$. The rods are 25-35$ I have nothing but good things to say about this set up. I fish for both walleye and salmon with these rods and reels. The drag is exellent and the gear ratio is higher than most. I lost some big salmon last year on my buddies Okuma's, because of the drag.......don't skimp you'll be sorry.

Howdy, Hammertime

It seems that everyplace has about the same price on the Daiwa LCs. Give Jeff Arnold at Reeds a call. He's a board sponser and I'm sure he'll shoot ya a pretty good deal for the quantities your talking about. In addition, he doesn't charge for shipping. May be worth a call. Click on the banner at the top of the General Discussion board.

Can you tell me what rod you paired your okuma with. I am planning on buying a couple of okuma lc reels--trolling this year for walleyes. I want to put fireline on them--any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

If I was buying that many, I'd call around to a half dozen tackle dealers and see what kind of deal they will make you. You might even try some of the online dealers. what area are you in?

Go with the SG27LC,not the 47.

If you want the extra line capacity of the 47 buy the SG47LC and not the 47LC. The SG model costs more but, it's a better reel. I haven't had to repair/replace one in 9 years. I have the SG27LC and also some SG47LC models.
