I recently built my 1st rod from a Cabela's kit using a Saint Croix SC II blank. It came with decent components, instructions and everything I needed for around $42 ?? It was an ultralite, because I had the biggest need for that specific type of rod. My next one will be a walleye jigging rod.
It was fun, rewarding and I recommend it. There are also a couple other good places I have found other than cabelas,

I bought a couple of "how to" videos from alsfish.net that were pretty good. Artie Hebert makes the videos & is an excellent rod builder.
