Hey Roo: I use a rubber band. You can get a bag of different sizes for about a buck, choose one that goes around the center of the crayfish twice. Hook the rubberband on top of the crab. and wrap it around the hook once. This is completely harmless to the crayfish(until it gets whacked by a fish).Be careful, the crayfish will go back under rocks if it has a chance...keep it in the open when possible.GOOD LUCK!! Tight lines and bent poles to all!! Stump

Now here is a topic you don't hear much about, crayfish for walleyes? I do alot of smallmouth fishing and I would love to catch some tiny crayfish for bait. What are your secrets for catching the small, bait size crayfish?

That sounds like a great idea. I never thought of that and i fish a lot of smallmouth waters.

Most commercailly made trap will work very well, but for less money you can make your own. Take some fairly heavy wire mesh and roll it into a cylinder about a foot in diameter, and use some wire and thread it close. Next take two pieces and make two cones thats heigths are about 1/4 of your cylinders length, and has a base (wide part) thats 1 foot in diameter, and has a hole in hte top thats about 1 inch maybe 2. Toss in some scrap or rotting meat (the guts from cleaned fish work extremely well here) and thread the cones onto the ends. If you can find some good crayfish structure tie a rope onto your trap and toss it out there and come back after a day or two. If you want a lot of crayfish spread out mulitple traps but about two days will get you about 30 crayfish in a good area.
