View Full Version : spiderline vs. fireline
I've heard alot of talk about fireline and power-pro but what does everybody think of spiderline??? Is it hard to tie knots in or is there any other downfalls to it?? I would be using it for trolling walleye/salmon and maybe some jigging. Thanks for all inputs ahead of time. Chad

I have used the 24lb test spiderline on my spinning reel for the past year. I use it for catfish, bass, walleye, and wipper. Nots tie great in it. There is no strech. It is abrasion resistant. I use a meduim light rod so the hook does not rip out of the fishes mouth. It's the best line I have used.

I've used spider line and fire line, but never power pro. I prefer the fire line because knots are little easier and the line itself has a smoother finish. Spider line tends to wear and abraid faster from casting and general use. Give them a try and see which one works best for your style of fishing.
You might find that because spiderline is a braid, and tends to be flat - rather than round - that it can really dig in and cause binding in the reel. If you happen to get knots in the line - cutting them out is about the only way to get them out.
If you are going to troll with the line - and let line off the spool - no problem.
However, if you are going to cast with the line - most folks find that to cast well - to keep from digging in etc. that it is necessary to go to a larger size line.
i.e. rather than casting with 10 lb spider wire, you might find that - in order to keep from tangling etc. you might have to go to 15 or 20 lb spider wire.
A general rule of thumb as far as casting is concerned - at least with spiderwire is to use the same diameter line - as if you were using mono.
Take care
