Need information on Lake Oahe in S.D.

I am planning on taking my family to Lake Oahe the last week in May, what should I expect? I have only been to South Dakota one other time in my life. I have read the walleye fishing is limited to mostly small fish, but I am looking for a place to camp, fish, and give my six year old a chance to catch some walleye.
If there would be a better place to chase some walleye please let me know. I live in North Missouri and travel to Canada each spring, but I can't make the trip there until Aug this year.
I would like to have some information on general areas to fish, any information to make a week enjoyable.
Please e-mail me at walleyguide@hotmail.com
I am not a professional guide...just a nickname that my brother and sister gave me years ago.
Thanks in advanced for your help.

Hello:
Check out Pierre SD. Nice government campgrounds below the Dam,(hookups, RR, etc) can fish Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe from the area. Also primative camping and private campgrounds above the Dam. Check out Pierre on the Internet, Chamber should have plenty of information. Have fun, will be heading that way 1st week in June!

Glad to here you are coming to South Dakota. The fishing on Oahe should be great this year, only problem will be the size of the fish but GFP has raised the limit to try to cull the smaller fish, so you can make up in quantity what you lose in quality. You still have the chance of big fish but you are only allowed to keep one a day. Game, Fish and Parks also has an Oahe only license for the whole family if you want to save some money. There are campgrounds from Pierre all the way to Pollock, most Have full service so you should have a good experience. You will also find most South Dakotans to be very friendly and helpful. If you are looking for quality fish I would suggest trying the glacial lakes around Waubay. Lots of big walleye, northerns and jumbo perch. Excellent campgrounds at Pickrel lake. Waubay is the hot lake now, but Prickrel and Enemy Swim have nice fish also. you have any questions about our great state please feel free to write. Good luck in May. baymandc@hdc.net in Aberdeen, the real Pheasant capital of the world.

Walley, The best May bite is around the Mobridge area. There is good lodging and very helpful baitshops there and plenty of access's to the river if it gets windy. You and your son are going to catch more fish than in your wildest dream....

I will even provide you with a number for a marina/baitshop and lodging in the Mobridge area.
Bridge City Bait and Marina -Indian Creek Recreation Area.

If you want to camp, the Indian Creek Recreation area is a good one there. Many places, including RV hookups if you are into that sort of thing.

Scott.

PS End of may is a perfect time for that area!

We have heard about the great fishing in Oahe and I know a guy that lives near Bismark. Has anyone fished in the north end and is it as good as down south and do they have a special license and limits like South Dakota. We plan on going there in late June.
Thanks in advance

Folks thanks for all the information you have provided...keep bringing it on..
I have contacted the S.D. Fisheries Department to get maps and information.
Note to Dutchman...sorry but it's my 6 year old daughter, I should have listed that... ...but she loves to catch fish. This trip will take us through Omaha to "the zoo" as well.
Again thanks for all your help.

There's a lot of fish near Bismarck too, but there is no special Oahe license in ND. Also, the area from Bismarck south to about Beaver Bay is more river than reservoir, and with the low water has gotten pretty treacherous. I'd sugges that if you want to fish in ND you either go north to Sak, or go all the way south to Langliers bay, near the state line.

Yup, Still Oahe, you have to go past Pollack a few miles to hit Oahe in North Dakota
