View Full Version : Shimano Spirex SR 1000 RD
How would this reel work with a gander mountain guide series 6 1/2 foot medium action rod. Used mostly for jigging and rigging. With 6# fireline? Or how about rapala line?

I would reccomend a gary roach signature lightning rod 7'
I have one and it is unbeatable for jigging it has a very fast tip and stiff action you won't miss a bump!!
As far as line don't use fireline with a rod this fast or you will rip their mouth's off. If you like fireline try a softer action. I prefer the heavy action of the roach but I am using 6 lb. test rapala finesse (clear) this combination with the spirex won't fail you. If your not afraid of spending some money I would go with the Loomis Walleye Series 7' Between 200 and 240
dollars the berkley is between 40 and 50
Good luck

A medium action rod might be too heavy for the 1000 series reel. You might want to look at a medium-light or light rod in the 6'6" length. Just a thought.

Lee,
One thing you might want to consider with this reel.
I'm pretty sure that it has the Quickfire lever. If it does you will not have instant anti-reverse which is very nice for jigging because you don't have any slack when you set the hook.
The instant anti-reverse is a standard feature on most reels now.
Just some food for thought.

Lee,
I have to go with AquaMan on this. I also think this reel might be a little too light for a medium rod. Consider the 2000 or consider a faster, lighter rod. Or take the reel to the dealer for the rod and try it out. I've done this and there have been times that this process has caused me to completely change my mind.
In either case I think you'll love the reel(s). I have four spirex's and they are the best reels I own and they have the best drags in the business. IMHO
