View Full Version : Type of Cranking line?

I was just wondering what line most people are using to pull crankbaits. I was looking for more specific type of line, brand and flavor. I have been using 12 pound tournement strength Berkly in photocromic color on three of the Diawa line-counters and 12 pound green fire line on two other line counters to get a little deeper. I have found that the fire line wants to bind up in it self on my reels when the line pulls tight. I am going to be adding some new line soon and was wondering what others are using.

Thanks

Lots of this is personal preference.

I like using Fireline 10/4 in Flame when cranking. It has better sensitivity and allows your cranks to dive deeper. I dont believe that you need to use clear lines. I dont buy into the theory that fish are line sensitive. I would rather be able to see my line then not have the fish see it. This is very helpfull when you and your buddy tangle up. You know which line is yours so that you can just cut his line. I think that a lot of fish caught cranking at caught by reaction rather then a feeding frenzy. Therefore the line color doesn't matter.

You do need to match your rod to the type of line you are using.

Open water trolling I would suggest Mono 10lb xt.

Oh ya,

To prevent your fire line from cutting into your line you should use backing on your line counter. I use 10-20 lb junk. The key is to have it wound on tightly so that there are no gaps. When it it is loose this is what causes the problem. I usually leave about a 1/4 inch to the rim. The fire line will not take up much room. I attach the fireline to the mono backing with a uni to uni knot. When installing the fireline it is also important to keep lots of tension onthe line to prevent cutting. If you just reel it loose you'll have problems. Hold it between your thumb and finger and hold tight and reel slow. If you reel fast youll burn a hole in your finger.

Eyefish,

If you continue to use the fireline make sure the mono backing you use is the same diameter as the fireline you are using. This will help your problem.

Some of the guys that fish the western basin of Lake Erie like to use mono period. Berkley Big Game 12# to 20# test. For boards, dipsey, and straight line. Good Fishing.
