I just received the Cabella's 8 rod, Rod holder for my boat. I thought that it would be a great addition for storing rods while trolling. Now I have a question for those of you who have used one. I notice that the wedged base fits nicely into my seat base but it doesn't have a locking mechanism like boat seats have. Have any of you experienced problems with this in rough weather when waves are high and are crashing into the boat. I wanted to use it in the bow and I'm weary about loosing expensive rods.

I have the same rod holder and it's great for keeping the rods out of the way when fishing, but without the lock on the base the holder bounces out of the base when in rough water or even going fast the wind causes the rods to even move the holder out of the base. Always keep your eye on it when moving down the lake, hate to see those rods go into the drink!!

That's a real bummer. I don't think that I would of purchased it knowing this. I hope that someone has come up with a fix and can share it.

Someone addressed this a few weeks ago and recomended buying a regular seat base and mount the rod holder to this. Since I, like you already had purchased the upright I just drilled diagonally through the seat base and into the uprights base then I inserted a 1/4" keeper pin. So far so good.

Call Cabelas, tell them you are dissatisfied with the product. They will take it back. Simple as that. That is why they have the bargain cave.

Thanks SD/Will. That's the kind of answer I was looking for. Now you're helping me brainstorm ideas. If anyone else has an idea, please post.

The taperlock base for the post ..with the lock can be bought seperately and glued to the rodholder post. I've made planner board masts for the front ped. base with aluminum conduit and glued the plastic right to it. Works great and doesn't pop out.
I got the taperlock fitting from my local boat dealer.
Good luck.
