View Full Version : Lowrance x-85
Does anyone if this locater works at speeds up to 40mph? How good is it for the money? Anything else out there that's comparable but cheaper?

Mine works at speeds above 40. I'm not sure about the price/comparable unit question. I do know that I like the x-85. Good luck!

I think there are many locators that work above 40mph. Many discussions with depth finders on Boats and Motors.
It will work but there will be a slight time delay. At 40 mph you'll be past the structure before you see it. When going back to find that little hump you saw, don't trust your sense of direction follow the trail of prop. bubbles. Go back ASAP before they dissapear. That hump might be a lot farther back than you think it is.

You should get a reading at that speed, you may have to lower your transducer a tad. The problem with Lowrance is that they are slow, 6 pixels per second. I ran Lowrance products for years and have now switched to Pinpoint. In flash chart they run 60 pixels per second. Pinpoint has two new locators on the market, the 7320 is near the price of the X-85. Check it out at a retailer, they can give you all the particulars.
Good luck, Murph!

I wouldnt' even think of anything cheaper! The X-85 is great, although it may be slow. I am looking for something better?? I don't know if there is something that is more accurate, better bottom reading?? It would be nice to have faster scolling. The X-85 is the best tool I have- better than my aqua-view.
Does anyone know if you run the X - 85 in fast track does it still read at 6 pixels per second ? Seems faster than the regular scrolling speed.

The X-85 is a great sonar unit.
The speed at which a sonar unit will keep bottom contact is directly perportional to the experience of the tranducer installer!
You'll see many posts complaining about the slow scroll speed of Lowrance units and how wonderfull the Pinpoints are, due to scroll speeds of 60 pixels/sec, yada, yada, yada. The fact is, every sonar unit is limited by the speed of sound in water.
