Hey people I put my new troller down for the first time and I must not have the cable for the X85 tape quite the way it was on the old troller because it cut it clean in two. It got caught in the lock of the big water gator mount.
I'm going to tape it farther up the motor to the head above the mount to keep it out of this situation again.
My question is I spliced it on the water and it seems to work well even with the jimmy rig of twisting the wires together and taping. Can I permanately repair this with soldering it and heat shrink tubing maybe some silicone calk and electrical tape to seal it good from moisture or would I be better off buying a new transducer and cable?
We were at Redwing for the first fishing of the year. Small fish is all we caught and seen caught in the snow and rain.
Thanks for your help

Pitts if it where my boat I would replace it. It can be repaired, as you stated but I would always be wondering when it was gonna dump on me. If you choose to repair it I would suggest a product called Liquid Tape. It's available at most hardware stores. Best of luck...

Pitts, I have repaired several cables just the way you discriped, and they worked for many years. That is how a Lowrance tech showed me how to do it.
Good Luck with your repair.

Hey Pitts,
If I were you, I would fix it and seal it up the best you can and forget it. I fished for 3 years with a transducer cable that had been cut and never had a bit of trouble with it. Just make sure that it is solidly put together, yes solder it. If it doesn't come apart, what else can happen to it, nothing. If it does give you trouble, then go buy a new one. Why spend the money on that, there are always new lures, rods, reels and other tackle to buy.
Good Fishin' Pal.......great to see you are getting out, we will be on the river next week.

I have intentionally cut some of my transducers so that I could make my own switch boxes. The manufacturers get way too much for these things so for a fraction of the cost I went to my local electronics supply shop and bought connectors to fit the cable.
The only thing you need to be aware of is that the outer shield is isolated from the center core. Keep as little of the shield cut back as possible before you splice it to avoid interference and it will work just fine. Every inch of non-shielded area of the center core adds to possibility of interference.

I believe that your cable is a coax - One solid inner core wire and a stranded outer core wire. If this is the case, most Radio Shacks carry a cable TV splicing kit that works perfectly. Same idea.
As stated above, you need to keep the outer wire splice shield from contacting any metal on your boat. Heat shrink tube would be perfect.

Well, Pitts...
Now you've done it. The other guys replying are only trying to blow sunshine you know where. Not only have you ruined the transducer, the unit itself has suffered severe damage. Not much you can do at this point. Just send the unit to me, and I'll see that it is properly disposed of. :) :)
All kiding aside, they have got you steered in the right direction.
How did you make out with that Yamaha water pump impeller?
Back up to Mille Lacs Saturday for one more whirl before the ice goes...

Since I didn't need it at redwwing I haven't fixed it yet but I tried it there in the water and it still don't pee.
The next step probably tomorrow morning is to call the dealer in shakopee and see if he has the parts then go over and get them.
I'l fix it when it warms up a bit I don't think it will be a problem it sounds pretty easy.
Did you come up with the right way to wire a new troller?
see ya on the water
