Just wondered if anyone else had any experience with the Berkley spooling set-up. My son and I used it today for about 20 minutes and put it back in the box for return.

We tried 2 baitcasters with spiderwire and 4 spinning reels with Sensathin and Rapala finesse. Lousy results with everything.

I've been using mine for over three years now and like it very much. I have found that you can't get enough tension on the line with just the rubber spool stoppers that are provided with the unit. I always put my finger on the side of the spool of line to slow it down and provide a tighter wrap on the reel spool. I also don't use it on spinning reels. I thought I was getting too much line twist. I would recommend that you work with it a bit more. Once you figure out some of the nuances I think you will like the unit. Good Luck! Fred

I have been using the Berkley Spooling Station now for some years. I can appreciate your frustration with this product. However, with much experimentation and innovation, I finally got the line to go on straight and tight.

First, I found out that I had to use a damp cloth (damp as to not damage mono line from friction) so that I could keep the line tight while going on the reel's spool. Also, I used a small piece of cardboard, that I run the line through, to prevent the line from looping off the line's spool and getting tangled up, especially when spooling spinning reels, since when spooling spinning reels the line is perpendicular to the reel (this helps prevent line twist).

This year I've graduated to Berkley's Cyclone spooling system. I hope that it works better than their manual system.

Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.

I agree the rubber spool stoppers do not put enough tension on the spool so I don't use them. I just set the plastic springs tight against each side of the line spool for tension. I fill my spinning reels just like they show how to fill a baitcaster. Make sure you set your drag tight enough when filling so it doesn't activate. By doing this I have never had a problem with line twist and I get a nicely tight spool of line.

Thanks for the info - I did end up returning it - it was nothing like I had hoped for. We did 8 other spinning reels the old fashioned way with better results - and a heck of a lot faster.

The problem was not necessarily the spooling station but the line - especially the Sensithin uncoiling and getting tangled up in the tension device.
