I need to buy a new anchor. Could anyone tell me how the Richter anchor and the Digger anchor compare? I have heard good things about the Richter Anchor. I couldn't find anything on the threads.

The 12 lb Digger anchor will hold & release very well on most rivers and lake's for rig's up to 18'.
The Chene style's are great but they can lock up in rock and then your out one anchor.
Don't skip the leed anchor chain as many do, they help tremendously to get a proper set fast.
I lost 2 Chene style anchors on the lower Red River near dams last year, they were riged with no chains. I think I would have retrieved them if I would have got a bit smarter faster and rigged with the chain, they aid in knocking them free as well as getting the good fast set.

I've used the Richter anchors in all bottoms from mud to rocks and it seems to hold, even in high winds. the chain release works because you bring it in backwards, no snags and no donating your anchor to the lake.

I plan on getting one of these real soon. But check out their web site for more info if you are in doubt.

Get the Richter and you won't be unhappy. I've used MANY anchors over the years and this Richter WILL hold. And it will release.

Backwater, thanks for that :)! i knew i was somehow missing the boat trying to make my digger stick on the sandy bottom of the mississippi, guessing the end position and letting out 5 times the lenght of the depht before staying put(but not always). How long and heavy is that lead chain-i am thinking what makes that work is it "tips" the anchor down so it will dig? So that would mean the heavier the chain, the "tippier" it gets--dig?, man, its been two years trying to figure that one out! id like to have a Ricthor, but heck if i dont need it for this boat will make what i got work!

The Richter also holds with less lead rope than other anchors. It's a good anchor, you won't be sorry when you get one.

I go with the 3' length of coated chain. One end has a clevis and the other a swivel.
This has really made a big differance on the rivers I play in, hope it helps you too.

Take a look at the new ProAnchor by GuideMasters.

I also own a Richter but like the ProAnchor better. The wide flukes hold better in soft bottoms and has two reverse pullouts instead of one. Same price as the Richter.

Whether you use a spike style, fluted, chene, or a river anchor the chain will aid in the anchors ability to hook up.
I was a slow learner too, but when I chewed the fat with 20 or so top catfishing guide's around the US they all said "I say, I say Son, whats you's needs here is a chain on dat thing."

I will second the Pro Anchor by Guidemaster, This is the best holding anchor I have ever used. It will dig faster and hold better than any anchor I have ever used!

If you are fishing rocky, snag infested waters use the cheapest homemade piece of junk anchor you can get your hands on. Any piece of concrete or cast iron is fine. If you do use one of your better anchors tie a second rope to it so you can pull it out backwards if you have to because even the most snag proof anchors get hung up sometimes. After losing 5 or 6 expensive anchors you learn to be a junk collecter.
