I have three six gallon tanks that I use on my boat. 17 ft. Sea Nymph,50hp.Evinrude.I got the boat all ready, was going to start motor here at home before I went to a local lake to try it out.I do this every year sort of a test run before I go to Erie. The problem is I looked in the tanks and there is a dark scum on the bottom of the tanks.I don't mix my gas and I always take the gas out of the tanks at the end of the season.Any idea on what I can use to flush these tanks? I will definately put a new fuel filter on when I'm done! Thanks in advance! JIM
To clean the varnish etc. from the tanks use new gas, premium works best, to disolve the deposits. You can use about two gallons to do all three tanks. Do one at a time and siphon the gas from the first to the second etc. The auto shop I have my car taken care of at has a furnace that burns old gas along with fuel oil so it's easy and safe to get rid of the bad stuff. Running fresh gas through the lines after the main tanks are cleaned and then replacing the filter should take care of any problems.
Consult your marine dealer before doing anything drastic. They have come across this many times and probably have a simple technique to clean them out.
You can use regular old mineral spirts as long as you drain it all after your done flushing the tanks. The residue left in the tanks wont hurt your engine since it is oil based.I've been doing it every year with my 1972 merc and no problems
