What are the preferred Lake Michigan map cartridges for the GlobalMap 2000? Lowrance IMS or C-Map?

That's a tough question to give a definite answer. It depends on your needs and what areas you fish. Here's an example....Lake Michigan. C-MAP uses three chips to cover North, Central, and South. Since I fish mostly the western shore from Waukegan to LBDN, the Smart Map chip is much better since one chip covers the entire area and is a heck of a lot cheaper than one C-MAP chip. The C-Map chips do have a bit more detail and include some navigation aids IF...they're available for the waters you fish!
THe most reasonable place to buy them new that I've found is Reeds. I did find one that I was looking for on Ebay. Surprised the heck out of me. 85.00 too.
