I'm looking for a good handheld GPS, mostly for fishing, but also for some traveling. I've used the Garmin 12, and I like it, but I was wondering if there's anything out there that would be better, more oriented towards fishing? I heard Lowrance makes a semi-portable (I think it's a Loran) that is geared more towards the fisherman. I'm looking for this for my mom, who fishes the Missouri river around Bismarck, ND. I think one important feature is a good mapping/plotting feature for running the river. Anyone have any ideas or opinions to share?

Thanks.

Consider the Lawrence GlobalMap 100.
Rugged waterproof and has the world map all for $199.
Additional motre detailed mapping can be purchases and downloaded into this unit but you dont need it.

Best bet> out of date Global Map 12 by Lowrance:

Accurate. Largest display screen. Runs on batteries or DC power.
Uploads and downloads from computer. Only problem, programming interface is notstandard for Maptech Navigator.

Also, unit has space for 2 ram memory chips.
Works with IMS Map Create, but the program, like all brands, is crude, compared to what you might expect. However, no more crude than other mapping programs.

This is a real tip. Few realize the GMap 12 is best ever made.
Where to buy...Ebay, or some dealer that may have an older unit in stock.

good luck
