I've got a new boat and need to outfit it with a GPS, and don't necessarily need the sonar capability. With that said I have considered the lms350 as they are fairly cheap on closeout, and also am familiar with the lms160. Would one be wise to look at units that have the mapping (world background)ability? Not as familar with garmin products but would consider them also. Thanks in advance for your input!

I've used a Lowrance Global 2000 with C-Map reader for 3 years now and wouldn't want to be without it. When the fog was so thick you couldn't find your butt with both hands I negotiated sand bars and reefs from 20 miles out and split the channel markers! I knew exactly where I was at all times, the problem was, I didn't know where any body else was! Radar?

the garmin gpsmap162 has me looking, but im use to the garmins you can get them with a internal or external antenna for 399.00 i dont like the combo units where you have to share or switch screens,i like a nice big screen to view with both units,i currently have a garmin 3 but i want a bigger screen, although i will only be able to use it in the boat as the 3 was a hand held-just my 2 cents-

I have run the lowrance LMS160 for the past two years and have been very pleased. It offers GPS,sonar, world map,PC compatible and is very compact and reliable.I previously ran an LMS350A.I like the 160 better.I primarily use it as a gps and run a Lowrance X-85 with it for sonar.I do have a transducer hooked to the LMS 160 as a back up.I would highly recommend the LMS 160.You can also down load all your waypoints and icons safely in your pc as well as customize your maps.See ya on the water.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-05-01 AT 10:08PM (CST)[p]I recently bought a Garmin GPSMap 162 and the Mapsource US Topo CD and am very pleased with it. The 162 now supports WAAS and so it is very accurate. You can also update the 162 and the Mapsource software from Garmins website. The US Topo maps don't show underwater contours though.
