Thinking of buying a gps to mount permantly in my boat one with a base map, also so I can download a maps into. I presently have a gps 2+ great unit but would like the map feature. Thinking of either a Garmin 162 or Lowrance 1600 any comments on either would be greatly appreciated.

May your bait be lively!:-)

I have both a Garmin unit and a Lowrance. Personally, I think Garmin product are simplier and easier to operate. The accuracy is the same, of course. So only some of the features are different. I think the real buying issue is ease of use.

I've got the Lowrance LMS-160 which has sonar plus gps. The 1600 is gps only. I really like the ability to upload map info for marker bouys, shipwrecks and such for the area i'm going to fish. This cd comes with the Lowrance. I am going to upgrade to pinpoint (hopefully yet this spring) and will put the 1600 on board for gps.

I found it easy to use with the menu's. I don't have any experience with the Garmin's.

Good Luck.

Take a look at the Raytheon units that are out. I went by the PWT event on Wednesday and noticed many of the pros have switched to them. Perry Good had one on his boat that looked like the perfect size. I know the price might be a bit higher( raytheon usually is) but the quality has always been there. Just a thought! Good Luck

i haven't used lowrance but i have heard a lot of good things about garmin 162. (If you can find one). my son has 126 garmin with internal antenae he loves it. what i have heard about 162 is anyone who has 126 loves 162 because it has more pixtels 240?(i think bigger screen than lowrance also)and the ability to download maps and lake topography that is available for minnesota and probably other areas.
just my 2 cents

Although I have Lowrance and think that they are great units, it seems that Garmin is the new kid on the block.

If you check their current products -- they are doing a great deal of product development. If you check out the various software support groups, it seems that there is a great deal of software available - that will work with the new Garmin products.

Conversely, although the Lowrance products are wonderful, and work very well -- you find much less product development going on in that arena, and if you check the various support groups, the amount of Lowrance software is a fraction of what is available for the Garmin.

Check them out and let us know what you find.

Take care
