View Full Version : Winter or Wallet?

This is a fine winter. I sit with a low hour boat that is buried up to the fender tops yet and have all sorts of goodies that have been added (if I can get to it) over the winter due to W.C., Walleye shows, catalogs..... Which gives out first, winter or wallet? (Wallet is likely)

A quick synopsis of the winter is:
Gotta have new locator - add Zircom 2000
Gotta have new GPS - OK, but low buck garmin 48 to replace eagle
Gotta have new custom trolling mounts for transom - OK
Absolutely need mooring cover (leave boat in creek much of summer
and it's tough putting travel cover straps on bottom of
boat/lake but hate the duck crap on my seats or the sun damage
and too cheap for a covered lift)
Just had to have indestructable rod/tackle storage holder for $100
(you saw it at walleye expo & Mpls sport show, by the way what
do you do with all the 1 piece rods now that you have this?)
At the boatshow I absolutely needed the cordless drill drink
blender (for the deck, not the dock or boat)
And now we get tempted further with the discussion of the
Bimini tops. I have looked at full canvas and think it too
confining, maybe Bimini is the answer. I want it, I need it
but boy, Get me on the lake where bait & gas is the biggest expenditure!!
Oh Yeah, There are again alot of super lines and baits that make
what we all have obsolete. At least this part of it I can
restrain myself, I have all of the jigs, bottom bouncers
and most importantly Little Cleo's that I need. I have all
the bulk Trilene to get me through til the next great
breakthru (hopefully mine is pre-reformulate or whatever
the problems I see here and other places).

The best addition of the year though is a new grandchild to add to the boat (if there is room).

Bring on spring, I can't afford any more winter!!!
Maybe the Bimini is a summer expense (wife birthday?)

I hear what your saying & I feel your pain...LOL
I also got a new sonar Lowrance LCX15-MT, and now I'm looking into kicker motor....cha-ching....cha-ching...my wife just shakes her head :-) I think she wants fishing season here more than me atleast gas, oil & bait is lees $ than me being alone with Cabela's & Bass Pro catalogs. :D

Living up here I dont have much of a winter wallet, but I get great deals whereever I do bait bussinessin the summer.I have a kicker motor for sale,8hp.merc .But I understand the feeling of being ina bait sho with much to spend or with the mags all alone with a phone to order up.I have learned to keep the overhead down !

Yes, there is that mentality that the more you spend the faster Spring will come. I have succumbed to that notion with great success/expense. Then, when it arrives, you realize that the you forgot a few things but your broke because spring took so long to get here...Ahhh, the life of a sportsman! It can be worse then a gambling addiction. :-)

Cormorants on Black Dog Lake in Burnsville this morning are a sure sign we are very VERY close. The Wood Ducks will be the "one-two punch" on winter in my mind and they should be here in a few weeks.

Just got the Sportsman's husband/wife license with the trout stamp. $45.50!

I used to gage Spring by the Robins, but they were here on the south side a couple of weeks ago and BAM! Snow.

I have found that the presence of Wood Ducks means we are really done with winter. My little buddies...

I sure hope you're right about the wood ducks! Had a flock of about 20 out the back door in the St. Joe river yesterday morning.

Another good sign here in southern Michigan is when the herrons return, and I saw my first one on the river Saturday afternoon. ;-)

Now if we can just get rid of that frost on the windshield over night.

Winter still won, but I think I can launch soon (10 days). More added stuff is spare prop, VHF and looking for replacement slot ruler to keep my keester out of jail. Check back to general Gismo
post to be sure we have it all.

Oh, I did neglect the licenses I bought for both MN & WI, and soon to be Dakota's, Ontario and Manitoba.

Bimini is likely to be my true love's gift this year. My adult body doesn't need more rays. It's a small price for her to pay for me to be around (?).
