View Full Version : Has a pro ever caught a record fish?
Just wondering if there has been any state record fish of any kind that were caught by pro fishermen or were they mostly caught by sheer luck by someone sitting on shore with a zebco and a beer?

Came close 3 years ago for the OH record. Mine was 14.98 on a certified scale and record then was 15.01. That record has since been broken though and is now just over 16 lbs caught in the fall by a guy fishing for perch on a charter boat.
Now that I am no longer fishing tournies it will probably happen. :-))) Figures dont it.

A friend of mine was fishing the circuit back in '96 and caught the Saskatchewan record walleye (almost 18 pounds) prefishing a tournament on a river. I believe it was the Tobin or something like that. Don't know if the record still stands. Fish did not count in the tournament!!
I remember coming in from a lake in western MN from fishing all day and catching like 3 small eyes... we got back to the dock just in time to help a old couple net a 8 pound eye. They were fishing for bullheads with the heaviest darn leader and big hook you ever saw, with worm globbed on like brain matter... hehe...
Really put things into perspective - as long as you have fun doing it then thats the reward!
Hey Swat1 - I don't fish tourneys but have always followed your posts (or most of them). I'm just curious why you aren't in tourney's anymore? I hope you do get another big one, and I hope I get one someday too! :)

Hey bart this may be hard for you to grasp judging by your statement but most anglers are very smart and great fisherman. Recreational fisherpeople imop are better than pros because they have more smarts on how to catch more than one kind of fish. your so called pros target one kind of fish. I don't know if you are a so called pro or not but your post makes you sound like a putz.

You couldn't be further from the truth. Most pros that fish walleye tournaments are well rounded in fishing for all species of fish.
If you have ever sat in on one of the Glorvigan brothers seminars, for example, you would understand why that is.
If you ever get a chance to hear them, check it out.

Close...it was Kevin's brother Randy that caught the huge state-record Ohio smallmouth.

If you look at where most of the fishing competions are held they host good numbers of larger fish, but if you look at where most of the records are caught they come from bodies of water that aren't well known outside of its state and some times its only a locally known bodie of water. Now thats just in general theres always exceptions when you look lake erie and a few others.
And since we are on the subject of records any body want to guess where the next record walleyes going to be caught at???

I believe Jimmy "Big Fish" Klick, a PWT Pro, still holds one on the walleye records with a walleye caught on Tobin a few years ago with (I believe 2 lb test line). If my memory is correct it was around 11 lbs.

I don't know if it still stands, but Dale Stroeschein tied the Wisconsin walleye through the ice record a few years ago.

Hey Tim I was just pointing out that most records are caught by your so called "recreational fisherpeople" so what don't I grasp?
I'll study your superior writing skills and try to do better next time. Better put some new line on your snoopy reel and reweb your lawn chair cause spring is here man.

Hi Box: Thanks for the nice words.
It basicaly comes down to 2 reasons for me not fishing tournies anymore. The first is Money. I have been laid off from my real profesion for 2 years now and money got to be so tight I just can't afford it any more.
The second reason is that I just was not having as much fun fishing them anymore. I found I was happier by charter fishing and helping others to catch the big ones instead of just me.

Only one type of fish??????
This Pro or expro or what ever I am classified as now does charter trips for Walleye, Perch, Smallmouth, Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead, and Lake Trout. Further more I have always fished for these species not just one or the other at different times of my life.
According to you Pros arent very smart but the way I see it at least I can count higher than one!

To juls, I admit I took the post the wrong way and insted of writing my first response and then hitting reset like I should have, I posted it. And sure enough some other folks had to act as stupid as me and attack me also. And if I get the chance to see the gentlemen you mentioned I will. And to everybody else I have nothing against pros and apoligize if I offended anyone.
