what do you guys think about windy days when the water gets choppy that wind can be a real pain in the @## and pretty cold but I seem to do better in shallow water with some chop. Why??

And what about those sunny days I know walleyes don't like bright light and usually head for deep water when it's mid day.
But last year after the spawn in shallow water we must a caught 30 of em and it was a bright sunny day! Explain that.

They go where the food is. They were at those spots because they were after a school of minnows or other prey.
Breakin' the rules!

Eyelander,

You have posted several quesions on the mystery of walleye fishing which most of us can't answer, but keeps bringing us back to the sport. There may be some rationale explanation for some of walleye actions, however.

When the wind is blowing and it's cold out, many walleye may be found in shallower water for the following reasons: the wind blows bait fish into the shallow areas; this walleye chop breaks up the light waves, making it more tolerable for the light sensitive walleyes; the water is warmer in these shallows early on in the year and because of this the food chain develops earlier in these areas attracting the bait fish.

Walleyes may be found in shallower areas also on bright sunny
days for many of the reasons listed above. The main reason, however, is because that's where the food is. In the latter parts of summer they may be found there because of the higher oxygen levels due to wind action and the submergent vegetation, which also provides protective cover for them.

With all that said, I don't think anyone has completely unraveled all the mysteries of that great predator, the walleye. That's what makes them such a great game fish.

Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.
