View Full Version : fire line
I havn't tried fire line yet. Looking for some advice. Do you reccommend it for trolling/jigging or both? Do you prefer it over mono?

Yes I have tryed it, I like it for jigging but not for trolling. I used it for trolling last year and noticed a lot of lost fish becuase of the no strech factor, it would rip the lips of the fish, I even tryed using steady pressure and not pulling and it did not work. Also you have to wrap it around your clips on your boards otherwise they slide off and you have to pull up to pick it up. I love it for jigging and long lineing would never use nothing else, although i prefer the tournament line for casting it flows better. hope this helps.

I've been using it for about 4 years now. I don't like it for trolling because of the no stretch. I do like it for casting in weeds and heavy cover. This way you can horse a fish out without the fish getting hung up. It works well for jigging because it is so sensative. The one thing about fire line is that if you do get snagged up down deep, it's hard to break, unless you just cut your line. Or you might just pull up the whole tree. We pulled up a fishing net last year in about 20ft of water with 10lb Fire line and it had at least a dozen fish in it. Thats how strong it is. One suggestion is to use Fire line and then tie on a 3ft leader of mono. This way you can break it at the mono if needed. Hope this helps you.

I use Fireline for both trolling and jigging applications. Some very good advice that I'm sure others here will give you as well, if trolling with Fireline set your drag MUCH looser to avoid the lip-ripping problems others have indicated. I still use mono sometimes when trolling open water, but love being able to feel the slightest loss of lure action with Fireline when fishing areas where you may pick up weeds or other debris. With the drag set properly, I have lost very few fish trolling with Fireline.

Your get several advantages with fireline that mono won't give you. One you can troll your lures 20 -25% deeper, but take the one guys advice and loosen your drag and use a med/lite rod. Another thing with Fireline is you don't have to change line quite so often as uv rays don't affect it like mono. When fishing in deep water 30' plus if you don't have it on you lose- reason being is the strecth factor and sensitivity you gain. It will make you a better fisherman if your of average skill.

Some guys don`t like it for trolling, I love it. But, I do lots of trolling along rip-rap banks on the Mississippi and this stuff has saved me lots of baits. It`s tough and doesn`t break from rock contact. I do use long glass rods to off set the no stretch properties and set my drag looser than I normaly would. One application where Fire-Line really shines is casting crankbaits. I am a much better crankbait fisherman than I used to be simply by changing line. You can feel every vibration of your lure, every piece of whatever you may run into, and strikes are much more distinct than I ever felt w/mono. Again, I have gone to glass rods for crankbaiting to keep from ripping lips and losing fish. Beav

I love fireline for jigging and trolling. Being only an average jig fisherman, it gives me much more sensitivity. For trolling you can really feel what your bait is doing. I change all my hooks to triple grips to prevent lost hooks, and set the drags loose. I use it trolling for browns and rainbows, and have lost very few fish with the setup, and rainbows are notorious for coming off. Also, I fish sturgeon bay which has alot of zebra mussels, and the fireline doesn't break off like mono allowing me to lose fewer baits.

I use Fireline for all of my trolling. Long limber rods, loose drags, and a 3 ft. piece of Mono following a swivel will keep you from ripping lips. Where you really gain is knowing immediately when your lure/spinner is fouled with debris and you're not dragging it for a 1/2 hr. of non-productive fishing time. When the rod stops vibrating I'll guarantee you something is on that bait! I use mono on my jigging/casting poles because we drift alot with livebait rigs and I can re-tie much quicker without tieing leaders on the end of fireline. Also have been using same Fireline on two poles for 3 years now and I just cut off the ends whenever it starts to show a little fraying.( you have to add new line to your mono backing on linecounter reels to keep the spools full so counters remain accurate. but it works! ) Try it, you'll like it!
Thanks for the advice guys. I really appreciate it. Looks like I'll tie a jigging pole up with it first than experiment with the trolling.
