View Full Version : Is your ice out
I am in Minnesota and I thought it would be interesting to see where the is is in and out. Let us know.
I was around lake Pepin over the weekend and the north end was free and the south was still covered. It sure was nice to see the water.
MN
White Bear Lake, just north of St. Paul, is losing the ice around the edge, but still plnety thick in the middle. Maybe with the wind and rain it may be out be early next week.

Clear Lake in North Iowa is about 1/4 to 1/3 out and the remainder pretty black. What a change from a couple weeks ago!! Another week or 2 I'd guess.
Winnebago lost her grip over the weekend due to the high winds (45+ mph) and high temps (70+). The southern half is open, and the northern half still has a little bit floating around. In the northern part of the state up around Lakewood and Mountain, they were still walking out fishing as of last weekend.

Lower end of Oahe is ice free. Cheyenne arm is about half covered but the Minneconjou ramp is open and they just pushed the dock in this morning. I heard about some boats fishing at Mobridge last Sunday.

Just got back from a College tour this weekend with one of the boys and there is a lot of ice yet up north. Snow, too. We went from the Twin Cities up Hwy 10 to Motley and north to Nevis. From there we went to Bemidji. We came back via Brainard and Mille Lacs down 169. So I got a good idea of the big lakes in the area and all the lakes are showing signs of thaw, but with 30+ inches still to melt, we need some days in the 80's. There were quite a few guys on Mille Lacs still ice fishing in the shallows.???
I would bet we are a good 4-5 weeks from ice off in northern MN.
We crossed a ton of rivers and I will say that they are moving fast. Ottertail, Mississippi, Rum, etc were over the banks and clear of ice. Rains tomorrow will surely speed the melt AND the flooding. With no word from Backwater Eddie, I'm afraid he might have floated away up north. I think he is from the Breckenridge/Wahpeton area and the Ottertail is pushing an huge amount of water his direction.
Good luck to all those in the flood zones.

Lake Wissota, Chippewa County Wisconsin north of Eau Claire, the ice is in the process of breaking up. I got to watch the high winds on Sat. really do a number on opening up the north end. With another week of warm weather the entire main lake will be open.
Fairmont, MN area lakes opening fast. I would say 2-4 more days for the 5 lakes in town.
I live in sw suburb of minneapolis and the ice is off the ponds after last nights rain. And a couple of lakes have black ice.

We usually keep our ice in the cooler! Couldn't help myself with that one. You have more than ice to worry about now in MN with all the rain and flooding.
Here in Ark we are seeing temps in the 80's and our water temps are rapidly on the rise. We had water temps just right for spwaning about 52deg two weeks ago, and now is 60 plus. We are switching to crawler harnesses. And this is only April 11. This is about a month ahead of time. Sure having strange weather, and the Nino and Nina's are over.
LOTW still has 3 feet of solid ice, Still drilling holes,
the fishing is AWESOME. Snowcats and Wheelers.
Season closes the 15th.
Also, beware of the pressure ridge areas this time of year,
they can open up to be huge rivers in no time flat.

Ice is about two feet thick at Ashland, WI (Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior) and getting rotten. Starting to go at the power plant and head of bay. Ferry line has started, again, at Bayfield, WI. Two weeks, maybe three, before open water?????

Any day now! I drove along White Bear Lake, and there were a few people fishing off the bridge, and the ice is looking black all over. South of the island has a pretty good open spot too. Two days ago Bald Eagle was black all over as well.
