View Full Version : Off shore planer boards
When using my off shore planer boards I have found that they release to easily. A fish may take the bait or I am simply realing in, the clips seem to let the line slip out. I am using fireline and have double wrapped the as some tips have suggested. I was wondering if anyone had any other tips. Maybe replacing the clips, new pads, etc. Any suggestions please.

Try using the red clips. It seems they are a little stiffer.

You did not mention which color releases you were presently using. If you are using the black ones, change to the red ones. They are a lot stronger, and will hold the line better. Keep double wrapping the back release though if your using Fireline, or you will still find the board slipping back.

Replace the front clip with a red clip for heavier tension and double wrap. I have removed the rear clip on my Off Shore boards and replaced them with a large snap swivel. This way, if the front clip releases, the board will slide down the line, and you can reel it up to reset it instead of having to go back and pick the board up.
Two years ago I replaced all my Off-Shore front releases with a release called the "Snapper". At the time it was sold through Wille (I think they have since been bought by Big Jon). If you can locate this clip I would highly recommend it. The pads don't "stick" together like the Off-Shore pads and there is a "pin" that locks the line into the clip when the clip is closed (if for some reason the pad were to come off the line the board just slides back to the lure). Don't get me wrong, I love Off-Shore boards but I think their clips leave something to be desired (especially if you use FireLine). If you can track down this Snapper release I would highly recommend it.

Hi
If you are currently using the red clips and have used them a while. Yes, you could replace the pads on the clips. The pads could wear in time from the pulling of the line on them and that could maybe cause it do as you mentioned. You can order these from Off shore.

My remedy consists of buying roach boards and hacksawing the clip off about 1 1/4" back from the tip of the clip so you have some of the mounting bracket to take with you. Throw the remains of the roach board in the garbage can. Take the off shore board and remove the nut and bolt and remove the line holding clip. You will need two drill two holes in the removed roach clip. One to line up with the exsisting hole on the off shore board clip holder and one for the second hole on the removed roach clip. Install removed roach clip with two bolts and locking nuts to the off shore clip holder. WALLAH! Great board!, Great clip. Holds fire line and does not slip. "COMA"

I have done the same thing and it works great. However, I just purchased 4 new roach clips(pun intended). I like to use tattle flags so the back clip also need to be a roach. You only need to modify the clips to put on the arm of the board. Fairly simple task.

I was using the red clips and had the same problem. I took 2 roach clips out of my snap weight kit and put them on my boards and it cured the problem. They work great. Good Luck

Yeah, I already had the roach boards. Did not like them anyways . They had a bad habit of diving under water half way back to the boat. I was happy to cut them up.
Where can you buy just the clips? Thanx.
