I need help. I was fishing in a small pond off Lake Ontario for perch and did quite well. I was lucky enough to catch the biggest perch I've ever caught and wondered about the weight. The fish was 15.25" long with a 12" girth. It was a difficult thing to do but I returned her unharmed to the water.Does anyone have any idea what a perch like this would weigh?? I have already had a few guesstimates by those that witnessed the catch but I don't believe them. Thanks

eyedokter,
Hit the finger lakes if your looking for a mess of those big perch. A buddy of mine has been catching quite a few in the same size out of Seneca and Cayuga lakes. They range from 11-16 inches, we try to keep just a few males and put the females back.
Give those lakes a try!

Scott, I love to fish Seneca and also Canandaigua for the slobs. I just have never had one sooo big. I agree with keeping just the males but this one tested me. I wish it had been daytime so I could get a good picture of her. Now I've just got to get the 15'boat up and running. Are you going to the WC gathering this fall in Dunkirk ?

Been thinking about the get together but don't know if i will be able to make it, might be a last minute thing. Would be great though, have never any of the big lakes. Many things fighting for my time and ataintion. Do you fish Onieda at all?
LAST EDITED ON Apr-10-01 AT 01:44PM (CST)[p]Nice FISH! That is a pig under anyone's terms. I fish Devils Lake during the winter and perch that size aren't the normal, but are also not that uncommon. The Fish and Game Department did a study on the lake and found that keeping big fish like that will have very little effect on the overall population of perch in our lake. Walleyes and Pike are a different story, that is just what they said about the perch. . .

Hey Doc.. got one a bit smaller than that on Seneca few seasons back that was just short of 3#.
I'll be at the Erie East WC this summer hope to see you then. Where are you staying??
Length x length x girth diveded by 1200 would make that piggy 2.33# - what weight did your friends guess?

I haven't fished Oneida in years. It's a much longer drive than Honeoye and I almost always fish alone. That makes for a long ride home after dark. I always had good luck in Oneida though, maybe I'll try to get up there again this spring/summer.

Gilligan, I don't have reservations anywhere yet. Where are you staying??Any suggestions?? It would be nice to be at the same hotel as other WC'ers. I'll also be needing a ride as my 15 footer is not the best boat for Erie.

water_wolf, it was Long Pond. Most of the pressure has been on Cranberry. Yup,some slobs for sure. The evening I got the 15.25", I also had one 14.75" and a few more over 12". I think the perch bite is just about over though, now it's time for the crappies to come in

Many of us will be staying at Westfield NY.. its about 5 miles from Barcelona launch and probably 15 or 20 min to Dunkirk.
Theatre Motel nothing fancy but clean. I got a special price for a week of $180 +tx. The # is 716-326-2161. Hopefully we will have a cookout and it will be held there.
Instigator (Jeremy) had posted earlier that he was looking for someone to ride along in his boat. (I might also, trying right now to prefish with one of the pros and dont want to commit yet) Drop me an email and I'll send you his addy, dont like posting someones address here.

Just been there twice. The more popular areas are at the mid point of the lake on the west shore. There is a fairly new state launch near there. Place further north called Roys Marina worst launch and rudest people I've ever met.
If you can get a copy of hot spots map of Seneca they list the launches, key spots etc.
