I am less than an experienced walleye fisherman, but very experienced in other species and I need some advice. There is a large shallow lake (16' max.) and before opener some pig walleyes (3lb to maybe 12lb) inhabit the shallow reeds. I see hundreds of them while scouting for panfish, but by opener they no longer spend their days in shallow. Could it be possible that at 12:01 AM on opener they could be up shallow eating. I have seen many people fish there at night later in the year, but don't know about opener. If they would bite what would be the best way to catch them? I was thinking lighted slip floats or maybe trolling minnow baits, or is it too early for that? Any advice for this novice walleye guy would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you sure these are walleyes and not suckers?

I have been in the rivers and shallows of a few lakes at opener and seen Suckers by the hundreds and at a quick glance (becuase they scurry to deeper water) they look like walleyes in the spawning areas.

I watched as two 15 year old boys speared a few and realized that they were suckers..big suckers!

Just curious.

Like I said I am a novice "walleye" angler not stupid and new to the sport. They are walleye's and big walleyes, I am going to try catching them because they are truly big. I guess I wasn't clear about myself. I know how to fish with the best of them, I am just trying to get some advice from anglers who are as experienced in Walleyes as I am for other species.

P.S. I saw the hundreds of walleyes while searching for trophy panfish. The only calm day we had last year that we were able to effectivly look for panfish was awsome. We caught 4 crappies, a 2lb, 2.5lb, and two at around 3lbs.
