Hi,I am looking for some advise or help from someone who makes (pours) their own Jig heads. Long story made short my wife’s grandfather operated a fishing camp, and was a fishing guide for years on Rainy Lake in Minnesota. He always spend time with his grand children teaching them to fish, and I was fortunate to know him for a couple of years. The Jigs he made (before I knew him) and used are treasured by his grand kids, however most have been donated to the many rocks and boulders in Rainy.Last fall while we were winterizing the cabins I stumbled across what appears to be the mold that he used to make the Jigs. It has two sides that are attached with a hinge, with two handles, and a hole for pouring in the lead. So here is the question…. I would dearly like to make a bunch of Jigs in his honor and pass them out to family members. So do I get a lead bucket and start melting (is it difficult), or is there someone that might be willing to make some up in trade for something nice? Please let me know what I am getting into here… Thanks for your consideration. dw
nice to hear somebodies wants to carry out the traditions, but molding jigs can be dangerous, best and safest is to buy a melting pot, and use clean lead in a very well vented area. sorry so brief if want more info E-mail me Slug

it is pretty easy but it is best done in a well venilated area. the fumes from melting lead are toxic. best to buy a melting pot(about$40) and do the melting outside or in the garage.the first few jigs may not turn out because the mold has to get warmed up. after that put the hooks in and pour your brains out.

Get the electric pouring furnace that fills from the bottom with the lift of a handle. Makes it fun and quick. Put your mold on top of the furnace and the mold will be hot when the lead is melted and ready to pour. Have fun Jeff
It's best to buy a melting pot with a bottom dispenser for the molten lead that way you don't need to dip the molten lead out of the pot. ***most importantly DON'T GET ANY MOISTURE NEAR THE MOLTEN LEAD.*** It will explode showering molten lead everywhere. I new this before I started but still had it happen to me. I pour 5oz bank sinkers for paddle fish snagging so I go through alot of lead. good luck and where eye protection.

If you don,t want to do it, I'll do it for you. Only problem is how do I get the jig? By mail I guess if you want to send it to Indiana. You may elect to buy the pot, lead and hooks and do it yourself. E-mail if you would like me to do it. I wouldn't want anything in return. Good fishing, God bless.
