Has anyone used the line-counters you attach to your rod and run line through it? (Using my current reels vs. buying new)

I am trying to save a buck or two.

Thanx in Adv.

The general consensus seems to be that the Shakespear works the best. I have one that I use on a rod that sees alot of double duty. They are not as handy as my 27LCs, but are certainly better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!

The one advantage to these types of linecounters is that they are not dependent on the quantity of line on the spool.

Thanx Dave!

I was looking at the Shakespear....
For a couple bucks I will take a look!

Have you had any problems with them?

You're going to get people telling you to save your money and go get Daiwa reels. But IMHO the Shakespeare line counters that I own work great. The main reason that I started to use them is that I use left handed reels exclusively and no one makes left-handed line counters. I have found them to be reliable and accurate. Do your own research and buy one and measure out 50 and 100 feet and compare the counted line length to your measurements. If you're capable, try this with a borrowed line counter reel. I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised. The only time that I had problems with one was right before ice up, when one froze up on me and I had to use a backup. You may want to check the archives because this discussion has come up many times before.

Good Fishing.

No problems at all, Butch

I use it for longlineing on a rod that also doubles for some casting applications.

One other trick you can use if you don't want to use the line counter is to put a slip bobber knot on you line, run out a measured lenght of line using a tape measure (I use 100 ft), then tie on the bobber knot. You'll always know where 100ft is and I just estimate from there.

I too have used the Shakespeare digital madel, works great. I got mine so I can use it on any rod even when in my partner's boat. Can even be easily switched from one rod to another while running lines. For under $20 you can get several of these for the price of one LC reel.

Sunshine--

What type and pound line do you use with the Shakespeare line counters? I'm going to try them on a pair of trolling rods this summer and need to spool up soon. I'll be fishing a very clear lake and my instinct isn't to use the standard 10# line that the Precision Trolling curves are based on.

Thanks!
