someone posted a while back about replacing the hubs on an older ford explorer with Warn hubs. i have a 93 with the pushbutton 4 wheel drive and i have noticed that it no longer will go into 4 wheel drive when the button is pushed. i checked the archives but i couldn't find the post. any ideas on what this might cost? thanks

That was my Exploder and it was a 94. I believe it was about $300, not sure. I know it was half the cost of putting in automatic hubs. Go with the manual hubs, they are more reliable.

Are your hubs just ratcheting when you try to engage the four wheel drive?

I have a '92 and have dug into that before. First, check the fuse under the dash AND the main panel under the hood. You should get a Hayes Manual. It points out several options as well.

If both fuses are good, then you will need to check the button to be sure the connection on the back has not fallen off.

Next have the servo checked by a mechanic. This is the device the pushes the couplings out into the hubs and engages the transfer case.

You could be looking at a few buck or a thousand depending on where the problem is. I would first look at the electronics and wire harneses of that system to eliminte a simple short or bad connection. Be sure to follow all the connections from the button to the transfer case. That is where the Hayes Manual is going to help you.

Just keep in mind that the following amounts are cdn $.

If you replace system as is with automatic hubs it will
cost around $850.

Your second option is to install manual hubs for a cost
of around $250. With the manual hubs you would need to
manually switch each hub. Then push the button on the
dash to go into 4x4.

Since your truck is 8yrs old you may be moving to another
vehicle in the next year, go with option 2 maybe.

I went with option 1 about 2 years ago on my 94 explorer.
I just reached 100,000 km yesterday. I keep the truck
for 2 more years. It mint now since I've almost replaced
everything on it.

Ordered it online from JC Witney. But the local Auto Parts stores carry them as well. (NAPA, Champion, etc)

thanks for the reply, i will be trading it this summer for sure. however my dad may be interested in purchasing it. will the manual lock outs continue to last and work well?
