I own a 1996 Johnson 115 which has given me no trouble. Last spring I went to a dealer to buy a can of engine tuner and asked if I should have the carbs, temperature settings and oil pumped checked. He said that if it was running well that I need not do anything. My concern is with the carbs getting clogged and running too lean and burning a piston. I do replace the water pump every 2 years, the water separator filter every spring and use carbon guard regularly.

Read the owner's manual that came with your engine. I'll bet OMC recommends that engine tuner be used after every 50 hours run time. No hour meter? Then clean it out at mid season and again before winter storage. It's important to keep carbon from building up under the rings.
