Hey all,

I was in the store the other day and saw some fresh frozen fish titled, European Walleye. The fillets looked like someone crossed a perch and a walleye, and looked like they came from about a 1 1/2 lb fish.

They tasted fine, and were much the same texture and color of Walleye.

My question is, what the heck did I eat? Is the European Walleye really Zander?

Thanks.........R

Na Eddy,

Even I wouldnt make that mistake!!! LOL

Thanks Keef. You are from the other end of the ocean, right? I knew the name was Zander, in fact I'd love to tangle with a few some day. But I was just wonderin if this was in fact what the supermarket was calling a European Walleye. There was also some Chinese Cod there too, and I assumed they came from a Chinese importer or some such deal.

Either way, as I said, they were good eatin. So i went and picked up a few more packs of them.

But now I wonder, do I also have to make Chips when I eat these fish? I dont want to breach some international protocal.:P

Have fun............R

Nofish,
Chips are not obligatory.
In fact we eat very few zander in the UK. There are not that many around, and its mainly C+R. They were introduced, think it was back in the 60's, from mainland Europe. They do appreciate the fishes eating qualities over there.
I was over in Stockholm last year. We visited a nice restaurant, had zander fillets in some kind of sauce, bottle of French wine to wash it down - about $US160 for two. Tasted real good, but at that price I would prefer to catch my own.

Nofish, North Dakota GF&P tried to introduce the Zander several years ago. I'm not sure exactly what happened with them. I do remember there was much controversy with their effort. I don't think it worked though, our you would hear about someone catching them. I do remeber that they are supposed to grow much larger than our native walleye. Maybe someone from Nodak could fill in the blank spots.

Hey Keef,

$160??? Yow! Man, at under 6 dollars a pound at our local store, it really is a bargain then. Heck, you may wanna hop a plane and come out this way and fill your suitcase....... ;-)

Unless you had a $100 bottle of wine.............

Have fun...R

There's no certain way you can know what you ate without going right to the source. For example, as pointed out by Ohio State University Sea Grant Institute, there are 19 species of fish that are sold in the United States under the menu entry "perch." There's enormous latitutde for commercial vendors in what they may legally label fish.

One thing I'd bet on -- you didn't eat walleye (our version or the zander variety).

It's the best English language zander website I've found so far.

i watched that with great interest...the zander that were
imported for stocking in north dakota were never put anywhere.
there was a problem with exotic bacteria on the fish or in the
water they were shipped in.

they never were stocked, it would be fun to have these big
fish as close by as north dakota but with all the fuss about
exotics i guess it wasnt the best plan to begin with.
