I am finally ready to purchase a boat, a Lund 1650 Angler SS (side console). I decided on a 4-stroke and wanted some input. I am torn between a 50 or 75 Mercury, or 50 or 80 Yamaha. I just wanna fish, no sking, no holeshots, rarely any big water. I will probably have 3 batteries in this thing and typically only one passenger.

Thanks for your help.

That boat is rated for a 90 hp. I am a proponent of maxing out horse power (I under powered a boat years ago - never again). Anyway, if you don't want to max it out I would go with the 80 Yamaha.

I put a 75hp Honda Tiller on my Lund 1700 Angler. The positive posts I read from Canadian guides and that I seldom saw a post from an unhappy Honda owner helped convince me. Plus Honda puts all their resources into 4-stroke technology. Good Luck.

Sold one w/ F-80 and the guy likes it really well. However....I myself, would not have any hesitation at putting an F-50 Yamaha on that boat. F-50 pushes that sized boat pretty good. AND..you can actually geta 50......F-80's are almost non -existent !

Dave, I got the same boat late last summer. Speed didn't mean much to me and I fish alone alot so I went with a 40 mercury .I too have installed an extra battery in this boat and it still gets on plane just fine. I went with Mercury because I've always had good luck with them. I can't say anything bad about either of these motors. I plan to keep my boat for many years so resale isn't a real factor. The 75 ro 80 will give you better selling power down the road. This is a real nice boat, let me know how you like it and what goodies your putting on it!!

Angus,

Thanks for the reply. I will be putting a 24v Minnkota Maxxum trolling motor up front (70+ lbs thrust). I will have the Lowrance X-65 or X-85 with a Johnny Ray mount at the console and a mount on the bow. This way I could move it around until I get a second sonar. Maybe I will just do both if I don't spend the $1500 on the extra horsepower. Wave Wackers maybe.. What do you suggest.

DAVE, It sounds like your on your way to having a great boat. I also went with lowrance at the console and on the bow.You should think about an onboard charger for your batteries. I used Fish-on rod holders, but Cabelas now has them in colors that will match your boats interior. I don't know much about Wave Wackers but if you backtroll their a good idea.I used transom boards to mount everything on my boat.I like the idea of having no holes below the waterline.Have you ever used a powerdrive trolling motor? Thats the only thig on my boat I'm not sure about. When will you get your boat?

Oh did I fail to mention a CSI Dual Pro onboard charger (or Guest)?

I will be ordering in April. Delivery can wait until June because of other commitments I have until then (no time to fish this spring while I am in school).

Fish On!

Dave,
I have a 1660 Pro-V tiller with a 45 Honda. Both boats are pretty close in dimensions and weight. If you have close access to a Honda dealer, slap a 90 on the transom. My Honda is the best motor I have ever owned and as soon as they come out with a 60 I will be trading. I also have Wave Wackers and really like the fit and construction of them. Enjoy the toy!!!!!!!!!
