There seems to be a lot of different opinions about Lund's and I would like to hear some. My wife just purchased a 1650 Explorer for me and I will be picking it up next month. There is a lot of talk about leaks and problems handling rough water. What's the story?

I've owned 2 lunds for the past 13 years and have never had a problem. My current pro V 1775 is now 6 years old and I still absolutely love it. It's the best all around boat that I have ever owned. However, I do not fish tourneys and I do not go wide open in 4 foot waves. I DO fish about 100 days a year and the boat has never failed me. I hope that quality control at lund has not gone down. MHO

I own a Lund Angler (essentially the same hull as explorer) and have absolutely no complaints or problems. Handles rough water just fine. Did I read correctly "your wife purchased" it...you my friend, are one lucky man.
I have owned 2 Lunds in my life. The first one was a 1650 Renegade, basically the same boat. I can guarantee you you will need to invest in a rainsuit and wear it in the waves. If you are looking for a great ride in rough water you should look at a glass boat. Anybody who says that Lund rides well in rough water has never set foot in glass boat. Good luck!!

I think you hear of more problems with Lunds because there is a much higher proportion of them out there compared to others. I wouldn't disagree that glass rides better, but my 1700 Pro Sport has handled waves as big as I want to see sitting in a boat (I just don't try to run 30mph in them). Use common sense in rough water, treat it right, and it will last you a long time (or give you pretty good resale when you trade).
Enjoy your Lund.......
I am on my third Lund, started with a Stinger not much different then what your wife so graciously purchased, and am now on my 2nd 1775 Pro-V. I fish about four tourneys per year but average over 200 days on the water. I have been very happy with Lund both from a durability issue and a resale value.
I use these boats very hard and have never had a problem with leaks or loose rivets. I do get wet in four to five foot waves, but I expect that. No doubt that you will get a nicer ride with a glass hull, but for many reasons I continue to buy metal.
I would be very surprised if you are unhappy with your purchase. For the vast majority of people you have picked a good boat to get your "feet wet". Remember it wasn't to long ago we were all getting bounced and jarred in those old 14' and 16' bench seat boats with 15hp-25hp motors. We have all become spoiled! Good luck.
What a wife!! Actually, my wife and I just purchased the same exact boat about 4 weeks ago and just picked it up last weekend. Unfortunately it's been a little too cool here in Denver to take it out just yet... I've fished from the Angler 1650 before, and fell in love w/ it, hope the explorer is just as nice. Keep in touch and let me know what you think of your new rig!!

i have a 2100 baron and run it often in erie and plenty of rough water.very scrappy boat pound for pound!pretty much a blue water type design but not a leaker.best advice is buy a good trailer and don't beat it in rough water and you'll be a happy camper!

Boy what men would do to have a wife like that !
I can till you that fishing will be a lot more fun in that lund , I went from a bench type tiller to a 1900 pro v last year and cant say enough good things about that boat , I fish the windy lakes a lot ( WY , BIG MAC, SD.) and got blowen off a few times ,but never felt threatened
like I used to in some of those other boats.
Use common scence on the water and enjoy that lund.
PS: Work less fish more!

I don't know about the boat, but your wife definitely sounds like a keeper! You better treat her right, my friend! She sounds like an "OK" lady. You are a lucky guy.
Back to boats, based on what I've learned from reading, surfing the boards, and on what I've seen I can't believe you could go wrong with any kind of Lund. Almost everyone says they are great boats. I was thinking very seriously about a Lund when I bought my last boat. It was just at the last minute I went fiberglass and Ranger. And it was my wife that really that pushed me over the edge. I wasn't even going to look at Rangers. She asked me "Why"? I told her too much money. She just said "Well it won't hurt anything to look at one." WRONG! She actually liked it more than I did.
I do doubt a Lund will ride as well as a fiberglass boat of equal length, but then, you scratch your boat you can fix it with a can of spray paint. I scratch mine, I have an apoplectic fit, and drag out the buffer, the buffing compound,... you know the routine. As far as how it will handle rough water Linds simply have to do that well or you couldn't sell them. Take a look at the guys that fish Mille Lacs. I have been there and you see more Lunds than about anything else. If you're getting wet slow down a little.

My wife insisted she reply to your post:
You had better be showering your wife with jewels and gifts, no women in her right mind would buy a man (especially her husband!) a fishing boat. Does she insist you take long, extended trips? Encourage you to "oh, just go honey."....I think she is having an affair. Hope not, but sounds suspecious to another female!!!

My husband showed me these messages. We are 35 and have been happily married for 15 years with three children. He laughs about the messages you posted. I could buy my husband a boat too and I would not want men telling him they wished their wife were like that. Everyone is special in their own ways and I think that you all should feel lucky and thankful for your OWN wife and for all she does for you and the family everyday. Try PRAISING your wife AND kids often.
Praising makes for a great family. Quit wondering about other wives and focus on your own family.
Because when all is said and done, there really isn't anyone that would truly care about you as much as the person you married. That is if YOU show the same caring; unselfishness; and kindness yourself towards your wife and children.
I just sold the same boat and it was flawless for me. Although I am not sure I would be willing to take it out on "big water" it was a great boat and I had no problems with leaks.
Great wife and have fun fishing.

But if it wasn't mentioned as a brag......and more a statement of fact. You'd have to admit that it was a nice gesture on her part to "gift" her husband with such a surprise! Your point is well taken.....and thanx from all us women!
