I have narrowed my search for a new locator to a X-85 or a Raytheon 470. I know Lowrance seems to be a favorite of most people on this site, but I haven't seen much on the Raytheon 470. Does anyone have any experience with this unit or is it considered a situation similar to Garmin, great GPS and not so great locator???
Thanks for your help

The Raytheon 470 is a very powerful unit. It has 500 watts of power compared to 375 on the x-85. The picture is very good and it does an excellent job with marking fish. Had Raytheons on my boat last year and had no problems. Going to be putting a 470 on the bow and a L750 and RC520 on the console of my new boat. Check them out. Doug

I am not an expert on the Raytheon 470, but am very interested in their product. I think it is safe to say that Raytheon is to sonar technology what Intel is to computer chips. I spent a few years working for the Department of the Navy at a shipyard on the coast. Most of my time was spent on submarines and carriers. Raytheon dominates the sonar field and our sonar capabilites are second to none. I think it is a good thing to see this company applying their technology to the sportfishing market. I am not making a product endorsement based on experience, just thinking they might have something to offer us.

i would say go for it. i for one have been a lowrace user for 20 years and am sick and tired of shipping it back on average within 2-3 years for costly repairs. raytheon is a 2 year warranty and i know two guys who run the 470 and next model up and are very pleased.easily outperforms an x-85.i personally feel the unit and company are more dependable and reliable and most of all will hold up which at least they back up with a warranty.i know of no one else with a 2 year on similar quality electronics.

Hey Capt, do you know if there would be a transducer conflict if I had a x65 on the rear and a Ray on the bow? I really need a new bow unit and the Eagle I have now screws up the Lowrance when in 30+ water.

At 200 khz it will. Set at 50, it should be ok. The raytheon can run at 50 or 200 or both at the same time. You will like their stuff. Doug
