I have a 42 lb. thrust Minnkota trolling motor. I have tried several batteries including marine and deep cyle, but none seem to hold a charge.

Any suggestions? How many hours should I expect?

John-

How big are the batteries you have tried? And typically, what kind of wind/waves/current are you dealing with? My past experience w/12 volt motors is that they eat up batteries pretty quick once you run them on hi-power settings. Try 2 batteries wired in parallel (pos to pos, neg to neg) to help increase your capacity. Make sure both bateries are the same age & size or the smaller/older battery will pull down the bigger/newer one. My 24 volt 824 Autopilot will pull my 1890 Pro-V 8 hours or more in all but the strongest current or wind. I use SRM-29 Group Interstate batteries, with a 6 gauge wire system. You can e-mail me if you want any other info.

The only thing I'll add is, I use WalMart's Group 27 Extreme batts. They've been good for going on 5 years.
Wire 2 batts together, pos to pos and neg to neg for longer on the water life. 24v is the better way to go.

Exide also makes a 31 series battery that would work better but the best would be to trade up to a 24 volt system.
