Am considering purchasing the 176 with a 125 hp Merc. Was wondering if anyone has a similar rig? Interested to know what top speed will be with this set-up and also how it handles rough water. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I just bought a Monark 176 DC commander. I test drove it in 30mph winds with a 135 optimax. We were doing 50 mph with and against the wind. The ride was dry and unbelievably smooth. I think its the best handling big water 17 foot boat out there.

Starcraft is owned by the same company from what I here. It is a very similar boat. A few differences are:

Monark Starcraft
Woodless construction Plywood deck
25" open transom Stepped transom
95" beam 93" beam
.100 welded hull .090 hull
Storage, storage 2 less compartments and more storage

Check out monark if you aren't familiar at, monarkmarine.com.

Regardless the starcraft should be an awesome machine with the 125.

Let me know if it has features that you prefer over the monark. Hope this helps, Jeff

The fearures I was comparing did't post as I expected. I'll try again.

Monark 176 commander .vs. Starcraft 176 Superfish

Woodless construction .vs. plywood deck
25" open transom .vs. stepped transom (ht. ?)
95 " beam (widest for a 17') .vs. 93" beam
.100" weded hull .vs. .090" hull
Storage and more .vs. 2 less compartments

Looked at the Starcraft when boat shopping. Then looked at Lund and Crestliner. I know the prices can be a little different, but amortized over the life of the boat....I think you'll be happier with a Lund or Crestliner. Fit and finish are better, feel on the water with Lund and Crestliner make it feel like a 'glass boat. Solid, dry ride and some of the best warranty and customer service in the industry. I don't work for any marine business either!! Good luck!

sb,

After four years of running the Starcraft TP170 on the Missouri River, it's my opinion that it handles rough water very well. If you are interested, please take a look at my ad (SD). It sounds like it has the features your looking for - if you are open to a glass boat. Thanks.

Bought a new 176SC August of 99 with the 125 merc. Have had several lunds before that including a TYEE. The only thing I miss is the full windshield. It has the year 2000 merc on it, so I don't quite have it broke in yet; but it cruises nicely at about 4800RPM. Equal to about 45MPH. Leech and Winnie get quite rough sometimes, but have found it more comfortable then the tyee, for getting to some place quickly.

I have a SF 1700 I picked up used, but it was cherry. Has 90 merc, which is a little under powered at 5000ft above sea level. For the price , it has great storage, and three live wells.Always hated windshields till I used it this winter on open water.
