View Full Version : What merc to buy?
I am purchasing a V1890 BT Warrior and need advice on what mercury outbord to put on it. I am putting on the maximum 90 horsepower. My question is should I put on the regular series or the four stroke. If anyone has this model warrior with either the four stroke 90 or the reg 90 and could take a minute to lend any info on max speed and how well the motors trolls or idles at slow speeds. Thanks in advance.

By ALL means put the 4 stroke on it!! You won't regret it! (if you can afford the difference)
Quiet and smooth are the 4 strokes traits in all brands.
A big plus also is...no smoke at low trolling speeds.

It's not the same rig, but I ran a V166 Warrior Falcon with a 50hp Yamaha 4 stroke (there weren't any 60hp 4 strokes available at the time) for two years and didn't like it. The motor was superb for trolling and backtrolling but it was a dog when I got 3 people in the boat with gear and water in the livewells. I personally wouldn't get a four-stroke again. My current rig is a V1890 BT Eagle with a 90 Evinrude Ficht and I love it. I had my 3 sons (youngest is 19) out on Lake of the Woods last summer in some pretty good seas and it handled it with ease. The Ficht is easy on gas and does not smoke. As far as I'm concerned, with the Ficht you get all of the advantages of the four stroke but with the awesome powerband of a 2 stroke. Just my 2 cents...

I've got a 90 Merc two-cycle (not on a Warrior, but that shouldn't matter), and can say it is NOT a good trolling motor. By going to the 100 hp I'd have had good top end as well as good idle performance. (Mine is a '98 model) As a result, I've put a 9.9 Merc 4-stroke on as kicker, troller, but didn't want to go with two gas motors.
