I just had one of the new Merc. 75 HP 4-strokes rigged up on my boat. I fired it up to see how it ran but I couldn't put the boat into a faster idle in neutral. When I tried, the outboard went into gear. When the dealer put the new outboard on, they used my old controls but must have done something to the guts. What should I check in there or should I just take the boat back to the dealer (2 hours one way)? By the way, the outboard is really quiet. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the site Rob, I'll check it out. Apparently I wasn't clear about my problem. I don't want to adjust my throttle, just to increase the RPM's while the outboard is in neutral to warm up the engine. Ordinarily you can push the button in on the FNR stick and increase RPMs without putting the outboard in gear but I'm unable to do so for some reason.
Gangreen, On that new motor you should not have to fast idle it to warm it up. The system does it for you by just turning the key. Although is sounds like there is something wrong with your control box. I understand that you used to fast idle the old motor with the same box that is now in the boat. How did you do it in the past? Push in a button???pull out a handle????lift up a lever??? Let me know Tom

Don't know about your Merc....but mine's got some kinda brain box that puts the motor into high idle the second it fires up......then slowly comes down as it warms up. I'm sure it's a cold start, fuel enrichment circuit. I've never had to use my detent release button on the throttle. But I do have a friend who couldn't push in and throttle up in the forward direction, but worked fine in the reverse direction......so you might give that a try if you need faster idle. My guess is that as fast as mine idles up cold....you won't need additional rpm's. Good luck!
